Creating a Disk Articles
Disks are used to store data for virtual machines. This data is retained as long as the virtual machine exists.

Disks can be created either automatically when creating a server, or manually from images. If you create a disk using an image, it must be attached to a server in order for data to be stored on it. For information on how to attach a disk to a server, see the article on Managing a Server.

To create a disk:

  1. Show the resources page by clicking the Resources link in the top right hand corner of the screen.

  2. Click on the Disks tab.

  3. On the Disks widget, click the Create Disk button.

The Create Disk dialog box is displayed.

  4. Specify the following:
    • Name - The name you want to give the disk.
    • VDC - The Virtual Data Centre (VDC) in which to create the disk.
    • Product - The product you would like to use to create the disk. Depending on the product you select, you may have different options for disk size.
    • Image - Whether to create a blank disk, or use an image stored at a URL to define the software it contains.
      • From URL options:
      • URL - The URL at which the image is located.
      • Auth Username - The username required to retrieve the image, if any.
      • Auth Password - The password required to retrieve the image, if any.
      • Checksum - If you know the checksum of the image, enter it here. This helps to validate the image you download.
      • Default User - If a server is created from this disk, what the default login user would be.

  5. Once these fields have been filled out appropriately, click the Save button. A job will be submitted to build the disk. Creating a blank disk usually takes a few seconds, while downloading a remote image will depend on the size of the image and speed of the internet connection.

  6. After you have created a disk, attach it to a server by managing the required server.
