Creating a Network Articles
Networks allow virtual machines to communicate with each other and the internet.

Creating a network is only necessary when using VLAN networking. When using PVIP networking your default network already exists.

To create a network:

  1. Show the resources page by clicking the Resources link in the top right hand corner of the screen.

  2. Click on the Networks tab.

  3. On the Networks widget, click the Create Network button.

The Create Network dialog box is displayed.

  4. Specify the following:
    • Name - The name you wish to give the network.
    • VDC - The Virtual Data Centre (VDC) to create the network for. Networks do span VDCs but must belong to one for accounting reasons.
    • Allow IPv6 Routing? - Whether to use IPv4 or IPv6 routing on the network.
    • Network Type - Whether the network is public or private.

If the network is private, IP address assignment must be done manually by logging in to the console of each virtual machine you want to add to the private network. For information about how to log in to the console of a virtual machine, see Managing a Server.

  5. Once these fields have been filled out appropriately, click the Save button. A job will be submitted to create the network. The Manage Network dialog box is displayed automatically; here you can perform actions such as specifying the subnets and firewalls used on the network. For more information, see Managing a Network.

When creating a new network it will take a few seconds for a subnet to be added to it, so please refresh after about 30 seconds.
