Creating a Server Articles
Servers, or virtual machines, are virtual computers that use physical resources from networked hardware. To create a server:

  1. Show the resources page by clicking the Resources link in the top right hand corner of the screen.

  2. Click on the Servers tab.

  3. On the Servers widget, click the Create Server button.

The Create Server dialog box is displayed.

  4. Specify the following:
    • Name - The name of the server.
    • VDC - The VDC in which to place the server.
    • Product - The product offer to use to create the server. This may allow you to specify different values for the server's CPU and RAM, depending on how the product offer usage values are configured.
    • Virtualization type - Whether to create a virtual machine or a container. Containers differ from virtual machines in that they have no virtualized hardware of their own, instead running on a share of the host server's physical hardware. This potentially allows more containers to be created on each physical server.

    • Initial Password - Using the Set automatically check box, select whether or not to automatically generate an initial password for the server. If the check box is deselected, the following additional options are displayed:
      • Password - The initial password to be used to access the server. This can be changed once logged in to the server as normal.
      • Confirm Password - Confirmation of the above.
      • Clear Text - This check box controls whether or not the passwords entered in the two text boxes are displayed in readable text. If the check box is selected, the passwords are displayed in readable text.
    • From - Whether to create the server from a local image, or from an image stored at a URL.

      • From Local Image options:
        • From - The image you want to use to create the server.
        • Disks - The type of disks to use.
        • Network - The type of networking to use.
      • From URL options:
        • URL - The URL at which the image is stored.
        • Auth Username - The username required to retrieve the image, if any.
        • Auth Password - The password required to retrieve the image, if any.
        • Checksum - If you know the checksum of the image, enter it here. This helps to validate the image you download.
        • Default User - The user account that enables you to gain access to the image.
        • Password Generation Flag - Generates a password for the default user. This requires scripts to have been configured within the image in order to work.
      • Disk - The type and size of disk to attach to the server. Up to two disks can be added in this section. If more disks are required, they can be added using the Disks section of the Manage Server dialog. For more information, see the article on Managing a Server.
      • Networks - The name and type of network that to connect the server to. The available networks are those made available by Brinkster Cloud Services.

If you select Auto from the IP address drop down menu, the server's network interface is allocated an IP address from the first available subnet, regardless of your selection from the Subnet drop down menu.

  5. Once these fields have been filled out appropriately, click the Save button. A job will be submitted to build the server. The Manage Server dialog box is displayed automatically; here you can perform actions such as starting, stopping and rebooting the server. For information on how to do this, see the article on Managing a Server.
